Hands cupping a growing plant for world environment day

World Environment Day: Striving for a better future!

World Environment Day takes place each year on the 5 June. The objective is to increase awareness about our wonderful planet and the importance of protecting our environment for future generations.

The theme for World Environment Day 2024 is #GenerationRestoration. Although we cannot undo what has already been done to the environment, we do have the ability to cultivate forests, rejuvenate water sources, and restore soils. We are the generation that can reconcile with the land!

How has the construction industry impacted the environment?

With historical research from Bimhow, claiming the construction industry was responsible for up to 50% of climate change, things needed to change. Over the past few years, we have seen a step in the right direction from major players in the construction industry adapting to a more sustainable and greener building approach.

Some of the methods adopted within the construction industry include the following:

  1. Utilising sustainable building materials
  2. Improving energy efficiency
  3. Reducing waste and increasing recycling
  4. Reducing air pollution
  5. Managing water waste

How we have changed for a better future!

Our passion for sustainability and environmental preservation is always at the forefront of our practices. We are proud to be a Carbon Neutral+ organisation and this commitment to the environment impacts all aspects of our operations.

Our Headquarters' sustainable practices

The Enfield Safety team at HQ has fully embraced our sustainable vision, with innovative ideas originating from various departments within the organization. Some of the notable sustainable achievements include the introduction of hybrid and electric vehicles in the fleet, the installation of electric charging points in the car park, the implementation of a comprehensive Plastic Reduction Scheme across all products, the elimination of plastic cups and cutlery in the canteen, the transition to LED lighting for reduced energy consumption, the use of PIR switches in communal areas to conserve energy by only activating when necessary, the dedication of 25% of the site as a wildlife haven, and the provision of cycle racks to encourage staff to ride to work.

Our supply chain sustainable promise

Our responsibilities include working closely with our extensive supplier base to address the following priorities:

  • Decreasing the use of single-use plastics.
  • Advancing sustainable product development.
  • Promoting sustainability in manufacturing processes to reduce emissions, waste, and water consumption.
  • Implementing controls for sustainable and safe waste management.
  • Ensuring adherence to social responsibility and labour standards.

Our environmentally friendly logistics practices

Our packages are shipped through DPD, our chosen partner due to their dedication to ensuring that each parcel they deliver is carbon neutral. In London, our deliveries are made using a fleet of electric vehicles to support our sustainability objectives. We collaborate closely with our international supply chain to synchronize orders and production timelines with demand, allowing us to opt for boat and truck transportation instead of carbon-emitting airfreight.

Our eco-friendly products

We stock a diverse range of eco clothing including Leo Workwear, Regatta, ORN and ProMaxx. Within the range, we have high-visibility garments and sustainable workwear crafted from 100% polyester sourced from recycled plastic bottles and post-consumer clothing, conforming to ISO 20471. We also stock a wide range of sustainable safety boots, thermal socks and work gloves manufactured with bamboo and recycled plastic bottles.

Our sustainable cleaning product ranges are also environmentally friendly. Our suppliers believe that cleaning should not come at the cost of our planet. Their innovative products are designed to help businesses eliminate single-use plastic while upholding a superior level of professional cleaning standards across various industries, all without causing harm to the environment. From washing up liquid to degreasers, Enfield Safety also offers sustainable kitchen products including wooden cutlery and biodegradable cups.

Our sustainable fire safety service option

Enfield Safety’s Fire Equipment Management Service (FEMS) provides comprehensive repair, rejuvenation, and refurbishment of fire equipment, resulting in a reduction of costs and waste by more than 70%. This benefits both clients and the environment.

Our sustainable packaging

All Enfield Safety boxes are crafted from 100% recycled pulp, making them entirely recyclable. Through close cooperation with our supply chain partners, we are striving to replace all plastic bags and packaging with oxo-biodegradable alternatives. Furthermore, we have taken steps to eliminate plastic strapping from our boxes wherever possible. Our ongoing efforts involve collaborating with suppliers to facilitate the switch to fully oxo-biodegradable pallet wrap.

Recycling protocols

Our go green & refresh moto-inspired part of our recycling service. Enfield Safety offers more than just affordable products; we also provide assistance with eco-friendly recycling of used traffic management cones and barriers. Our comprehensive recycling service transforms your used site plastics into newly recycled products. By collaborating with our recycling partners, we extend the lifespan of our products, minimize our carbon footprint, and help our customers avoid expensive landfill fees, all in accordance with our ISO14000 environmental management commitment.

Our Workwear Recycling service provides a convenient and efficient way to recycle workwear while ensuring full audit compliance. This service not only helps protect the environment but also safeguards your brand's security.

However, we can’t do it alone. We must work together. Join Enfield Safety in the fight to restore our environment.

In 2017, a new colour-coding system for hard hats was introduced. Since then, construction sites have followed this colour code for all new and existing sites.
